University’s maintenance of Weyburn
unrecognized

As an apartment coordinator for the University Apartments North,
I was disappointed with the Daily Bruin for its criticism and
uneven reporting regarding the problems at Weyburn Terrace
(“A broken promise,” 2/9; “A defective
incentive,” 2/10). I was most surprised at the fact that the
apartment coordinators were criticized by graduate students as
improperly trained, yet none of us was interviewed by the paper for
our opinion on the matter.

I have the deepest sympathy for the problems Weyburn residents
have unfortunately encountered while living at these buildings. But
neither of your articles mentioned that when major problems like
the ones you described happen after hours and on weekends, an
apartment coordinator is immediately dispatched to work on it.
Every time the elevator breaks down, a pipe bursts or a room
floods, one of us is there to work with the contractors to restart
the elevator, to vacuum up the water from the carpet, or wait with
the tenant until the problem is resolved.

It’s not uncommon for us to be working until 4 or 5 in the
morning, despite having a midterm or final the next day. Your
article also did not give enough credit to the maintenance staff,
which is also working 12 or more hours a day to resolve problems at
the Weyburn complex.

I’m sure that while working on the article, the writer
encountered some examples of good things we’ve done to help
Weyburn tenants, but I suppose that isn’t as newsworthy as
simply labeling us incompetent.

Jason Kulish Apartment coordinator, University
Apartments North
