Rowing to play in championships

The UCLA women’s rowing team will head to Sacramento this
weekend to compete in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships and
the Pac-10 Rowing Championships. The varsity eight, which is ranked
18th in the country, is coming into the conference championships on
the heels of an impressive regular-season performances in both dual
meet racing and multi-crew regattas. The team picked up victory in
the Miller Cup, beating out Texas and Clemson at the Windermere
Classic, and placing fourth in the Jessop-Whittier Cup. The varsity
eight now hopes those successful meets will translate into success
this weekend. “We have worked all year on the whole team
concept, and we all understand that our success will be based on
how well this whole team performs”, coach Amy Fuller Kearney
said. The events will be held at the California State University,
Sacramento Aquatic Center course on Lake Natoma. UCLA will compete
against California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, USC,
Washington, Washington State and a handful of guest schools.
LEXUS GAUNTLET: UCLA will be presented the Lexus
Gauntlet Trophy on Monday by virtue of beating crosstown rival USC
70-40 in the Gauntlet challenge, the largest margin of victory
since the inception of the competition. It is the second time in
the four-year battle that UCLA has claimed the trophy, winning by
virtue of a tiebreaker in 2003. USC won the Gauntlet in its
inaugural year in 2002, and followed that up with a victory last
year. The pewter-gilded trophy, which is a surprising 150 pounds,
will be presented to Athletic Director Dan Guerrero in a ceremony
at Pauley Pavilion Plaza, adjacent to the JD Morgan Center, at 2
p.m. Also present will be men’s basketball coach Ben Howland,
men’s volleyball coach Al Scates, women’s track and
field coach Jeanette Bolden, and men’s and women’s
water polo coach Adam Krikorian. The trophy will be displayed in
UCLA’s Athletic Hall of Fame during the next 12 months.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: UCLA assistant
women’s volleyball coach Dave Fleming was hired as the
women’s volleyball coach at Mesa State College, a Division II
school in Grand Junction, Colo., it was announced Wednesday. At
UCLA, Fleming served as the defensive coordinator as well as
coached the outside hitters. In his four years in Westwood, the
Bruins compiled a record of 86-43, and made three trips to the
Elite Eight.
