Students should have input in firing
decision

I was very disappointed to discover that the Chinese department
did not renew Huey Lin’s contract. After having her for
Chinese 1A through 3B, I can personally testify she was one of the
best lecturers I have had at UCLA.

I do not know the details of her “incidents of
unprofessional conduct,” but I do wish the Chinese department
and other departments throughout campus would take student opinions
into consideration before dismissing lecturers and staff
members.

I’d like to thank columnist Annie Tao for addressing the
important issue of mental health (“Keep your head intact by
seeking help,” Oct. 18).

Students should indeed be proactive in addressing their own
mental health.

In addition, as students we should take the opportunity to make
certain UCLA provides adequate resources in this matter.

As UCLA looks for a new director for Student Psychological
Services, we are afforded an opportune time to provide input as to
what we want out of this program.

We should ask ourselves what is working and what can be
improved. Are resources visible enough? Are services affordable?
Are the hours student friendly? What else can we do on the campus
at large?

Budgetary and logistical restraints will always influence what
changes can actually be implemented. But the first step is always
looking at the bigger picture and identifying the problems that
need solutions.

There are many great resources on this campus, and a student
perspective will ensure that these services properly meet the needs
of the UCLA population.

The Office of the Internal Vice President is working on mental
health, and we would love your input.
