LETTERS TO THE SPORTS DESK

Trojans got what they deserved It was nice
reading your article regarding the billboard by the USC campus
(“Billboard would set Trojan record straight” Jan. 18).
Like you say, some people never learn! I love it when someone makes
fun of the so-called No. 1 team, the media was making so much of
the USC football program that they totally forgot about the
Longhorns “Texas” team. I loved watching when Texas
spanked the Trojans, as a former UCLA alumni I was thrilled to see
the Trojans go down in flames. Keep up the good work.

USC’s championship chance foiled by BCS
Bruins are so predictable. It must really be eating you guys up
that USC has found the formula for success again and you’re
still trying to find your backside with both hands. As a USC fan, I
find your attempt at jumping on someone else’s idea very
amusing, but not all that surprising. Everyone understands the BCS
system is flawed. And since you obviously don’t understand,
I’ll explain it to you: the BCS is built around making money
for the producers of the bowl championship series, NOT finding out
who the “˜National Champion’ is. The only way to
determine that is by having a playoff system. But those in charge
don’t think that system would make as much money and
therefore, we’re stuck with a facade. I’m not nearly so
arrogant to say USC is the best football team of all time and all
that hype you cry yourself to sleep about. That stuff is just said
by the media to generate interest for the type of person who buys
something because of the pretty picture on the box. Real football
fans have an interest in the game because they understand and enjoy
football; that hype you believe is just marketing for the morons.
What I can tell you for certain (and with a fair amount of
arrogance too) is that USC has fielded a team every year for the
past four years (yes, four) that would have a good chance at
winning a real national championship in every one of those years if
the BCS was a playoff system. The Bruins have never been able to
say that and probably never will. I’m sure I speak for many
USC fans when I say your comments reassure the feeling of sympathy
I hold for Bruins and those of you who just don’t know any
better. Better luck next year. Feel free to print this if you have
the guts to print the truth. Chris Duplex Pasadena,

Bruin fans are welcome in West
Virginia
As a West Virginia graduate and a West Virginian,
I want to thank the UCLA community for recognizing the situation
that occurred with the two missing miners in Logan County, who
unfortunately were found dead about 4:30 p.m. eastern time that
day. That was a real class act and it was mentioned by the
Mountaineer Sports Network crew broadcasting the game. Reading some
comments by some of the Mountaineers and WVU coach John Beilein
before the game only showed how excited they were to play UCLA in
Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins could have folded during the second
half but they fought back. UCLA fans can take heart in that. They
will be tough for the rest of the year. Coach Beilein mentioned how
he was glad the Mountaineers had to fight back after the UCLA run.
I hope that some UCLA fans will be able to come to Morgantown next
year and enjoy some West Virginian hospitality. They will get to
see a beautiful campus and see how much West Virginians love their
Mountaineers. I can say that a lot of Mountaineer fans will be
watching what UCLA does in the Pac-10 and will be wishing them
well. Michael Bragg Glen Jean, W. Va.
