Speaks out

Will the fact that employers are using Facebook to screen
prospective employees now affect what you include in your Facebook
profile? Corinne Cifuentes

Third-year, mathematics
“Facebook to me, it just seems like a way to talk to other
students and friends, so it’s kinda weird. Maybe I’d
put more stuff that I’ve done with math, to appeal to
(employers). I just got on it a month ago. … But yeah, I guess
I’d keep it more professional.”

Zoe Loftus-Farren

Fourth-year, political science and environmental
studies

“I think that it would definitely influence what I would put
on the Facebook, because you put a lot more personal information
(on it) than you necessarily would reveal in an interview or
workplace situation.”

Brian Lansangan

Second-year, economics
“I don’t really put that much in my profile, I usually
use MySpace. … MySpace doesn’t use your real
name.”

Billy Sim

Fourth-year, neuroscience
“It would matter because if you put up a lot of pictures of
you being drunk and partying, employers will look at that and
screen you through that, so that would kind of affect what I put
up. It’s also hard to control because your friends put up
stuff about you.”

Alex Kertzner

Alumnus
“I won’t put anything risky in my (profile). I’m
not that type of person. … I won’t really expect someone to
contact me for employment based on Facebook.”
