Commission regrets inappropriate fliers On
behalf of the Campus Events Commission, I would like to apologize
for the recent ad for “Unknown White Male,” written
about in Friday’s Daily Bruin editorial (“Inappropriate
flier disrespects assault victims,” Feb. 3). I take full
responsibility and am sorry for any offense it may have caused. The
ad was produced internally and was not connected to any official
promotional campaigns for the film. The commission strives to bring
quality programs to the campus and produces scores of ads each
quarter, but in our haste to do so, we grossly trivialized the
recent events and incorrectly portrayed our concern for the student
body. Our office and the rest of the Undergraduate Students
Association Council are deeply devoted to increasing the level of
security of our students. We have been working on campaigns to
increase awareness of programs such as the 4-WALK Community Service
Officer escort service, intended to ensure the safety of students
walking home from our evening programs. I regret having distributed
the fliers on campus and am working closely with the Center for
Student Programming and the Center for Women & Men to guarantee
that our fliers will be appropriate in the future.
