News, not TV shows creates fear culture

Kyle Gilde accuses the show “24” of being an agent
of the fear culture, but he completely misses the target (“TV
shows should stop feeding culture of fear,” Feb. 14).

TV shows like “24” are works of fiction. The
adventures of Jack Bauer are clearly a hyperbole. If we are to
single out elements of the media as agents of fear, we should look
to nonfiction.

A girl goes missing in Aruba and Americans cancel spring break
plans. A hundred protestors burn down a Danish embassy in Damascus
and 1.5 billion Muslims become characterized as violent.

Because news broadcasters continue to misrepresent the dangers
threatening our lives, we live in a culture of fear.

It is in fact we Americans who have created the culture of fear.
If anyone is going to curb this injustice, it’s going to be
nonfiction reporters, not television writers.

USAC office space already open to all

“Kerckhoff offices may soon find new occupants”
(News, Feb. 9) contained inaccurate coverage. The communal office
space in Kerckhoff 313 is designed to be used by all student
groups. The space was opened for use by the UCLA student community
last month.

However, the Daily Bruin article falsely implies that the
workspace is dependent on the approval of the Office Space
Allocation Committee guidelines, as it states that “the
communal office space … held an official opening in January,
though no usage guidelines or application for use have been
approved by USAC.”

In reality, the communal office space is an entity in itself,
which has been worked on by the Facilities Revitalization Committee
and no longer needs approval by the Undergraduate Students
Association Council to function.

USAC has already designated Kerckhoff 313 communal office space
and allocated a specific amount of money for it. Therefore, the
fact that the room can still not be used as it was intended is
unrelated to the fact that USAC has not approved any
guidelines.

The only utility that relates to the approval of the guidelines
is the mailboxes, which will fall under an application process that
the allocation committee is working on.

We hope this service proves helpful to student organizations,
and we invite all student organizations to use the space as much as
possible.
