[Online Exlclusive]: Softball hosts Cal State Fullerton

The UCLA softball team (19-1) looks to extend its winning streak
to 15 games as it hosts the Cal State Fullerton Titans (11-10)

The Bruins are coming off a pair of weekend tournament sweeps,
during which they went 11-0.

UCLA defeated three ranked teams ““ Louisiana State,
Oklahoma and Texas A&M ““ in its five wins at the Palm
Springs Classic two weekends ago.

The team stayed on track the following weekend by winning
double-headers on three consecutive days against Cal Poly, San Jose
State and Santa Clara in the Stacy Winsberg Tournament. The UCLA
offense exploded in those games, scoring at least eight runs in all
six. Senior third baseman Andrea Duran started off the tournament
with hits in each of her first eight at-bats.

Sophomore pitcher Anjelica Selden was named Pac-10 Pitcher of
the Week for her performance in the tournament. Selden won all
three of her starts, which included two one-hitters. She struck out
32 batters in 19 innings.

The Bruins and the Titans have a lot of history together since
their first meeting in 1980. Since then, the two teams have played
each other 65 times, with the Bruins leading a close series
33-31-1. Last season, the Bruins won four out of their six meetings
with the Titans. Three of those meetings occurred in the NCAA
Regionals, with UCLA winning two out of the three.

Both teams have very similar rosters this season, with the
Titans losing just two of last year’s players to graduation
and the Bruins losing just one.

MEN’S TENNIS DOWN THE COAST: The UCLA
men’s tennis team has several of its players competing in the
Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and
Tennis Club.

Amid rainy conditions that interrupted game play, Luben
Pampoulov ““ who graduated last year after the Bruins won the
National Championship ““ and Phillip Gruendler advanced all
the way to the quarterfinals before losing to Stanford’s
James Wan and Jon Wong, 7-6, 2-6, 7-5, this past Thursday.

Third-seeded Gruendler/Pampoulov started the tournament with a
6-1, 6-1 decision over Steven Forman/Donald Johnson in the round of
64. They followed it up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over California’s
Lennart Maack/Dean Wallace.

The UCLA tandem of sophomore Jeremy Drean and freshman Michael
Look made it all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to
Rice’s tenth-seeded Tony Haerle/Robert Searle in straight
sets, 7-6, 6-1.

The fifth-seeded team of UCLA freshman Haythem Abid and junior
Chris Surapol advanced to the round of 32 before falling to
Cal’s Patrick Briaud/Tyler Browne, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

UCLA’s Jaysen Chung and Jason Nguyen were beaten in the
round of 64 by Pepperdine’s eighth-seeded Brian Morton/Per
Nilsson, 6-2, 7-6.
