Letter to the editor

Administrators, let the good times run

While I respectfully agree with the administration’s
interest in student safety, I vehemently oppose the proposed change
to the Undie Run route (“Undie Run fun, but changes are
needed,” March 8). I’ve been a participant of the run
every quarter since 2003 and was a cofounder of the
“Undie-Parties of 447.”

If the legendary Eric Whitehead (peace be upon him), founder of
the Undie Run, could be here to see this, I know he would hang his
head in tears. Those of you who recognize that name must join with
me in preserving the tradition in taking this undie-clad parade
down Landfair Avenue to Glenrock Avenue and back. We must.

I remember that first run like it was last quarter. Then and
there, my roommates and I took a solemn vow to carry on this
sanctimonious tradition to the fullest extent of our strength:
promoting it with all our resources, defending it against all
enemies.

Since then my roommates, myself and approximately 1,000 other
people have been keeping this tradition alive. To date, body count:
zero. A few skinned knees, a lot of water balloons, a dozen or so
“minors in possession,” but zero casualties.

This is not for the university, this is for Westwood. This is
not for the dorms, this is for North Village. This is for all the
kids who can’t stand the fact that city politics and
stiff-necked neighbors like Mr. Holmby and Mrs. Bel-Air have taken
the guts out of what was once one of the greatest college towns
anywhere.

Giving the administration control of this hallowed tradition
will only bring them one step closer to shutting it down. Go ahead
““ call me paranoid, but I want you to contemplate four very
important words: Black Sunday, Midnight Yell.

Don’t change the path; stay strong; keep on marching.

Do it for Westwood.
