Instituting tolerance is itself intolerant
I am disgusted by hypocrisy and endorsement of censorship shown
recently by Lara Loewenstein (“We have no right to
intolerance,” April 13). By demanding the censorship of those
who disagree with her “tolerance” world view,
Loewenstein has herself demonstrated the highest form of
intolerance.
Indeed, many of the people who demand tolerance will happily
denounce and try to silence those who disagree with them. This can
lead to harassment of those who do not validate this
“tolerance” ideology.
A university is an academic institution, where academic freedom
and the freedom to debate and question openly and without fear of
reprisal are highly valued. Enforcing one viewpoint ““ such as
that of “tolerance” ““ by actively silencing those
who dissent is anathema to the mission of any academic
institution.
The demand for a double standard is nothing but hypocrisy and
demonstrates that those who preach “tolerance” the
loudest are actually the most intolerant of all.
