Outdoor smoking not as troublesome as L.A.
air
I am fed up with the current trend of attacking smokers for
smoking outdoors (“Smokers must consider etiquette,”
May 5).
Claiming that walking past a smoker is a health risk compared to
breathing in California air is false.
California consistently ranked among the lowest in a series of
air quality checks conducted by the American Lung Association last
year.
Why not enforce a higher etiquette on car emissions and
factories? As I walk past Powell Library, I will be more concerned
with the effect the quality of our air has on children, elders and
young adults than with the effect of a person blowing smoke.

Refund wouldn’t just take away from USAC
Get a refund on your Undergraduate Students Association Council
fees, and sure you can buy those new Diesel jeans (if they’re
on sale), but you won’t have money for much else.
That $120 a year doesn’t just go to USAC ““ it goes
to student groups that live off student fees. Without student fees,
the task of finding funding becomes insurmountable. A few groups
would be able to support themselves with membership fees, but most
can’t. Unless you’re a big group, you’ll have a
tough time keeping your organization afloat.
The activities that campus groups put on will be dramatically
reduced. Philanthropic activities will suffer as well. Presidential
candidate Garin Hovannisian is right about one thing: This is not
about being Democrat or Republican. It’s about being Iranian
or black, being a fan of Bloc Party or Los Pinguos, or tutoring
underprivileged children in Compton.
Imagine some of the great things you’ve enjoyed while at
UCLA ““ now imagine life without them. Is all this worth the
$120?
