Peace is attainable in the future

I agree wholeheartedly with David Myers, who suggested that
Arabs and Jews on campus should learn to work together
(“Israeli-Palestinian conflict can’t be reduced to one
truth,” May 23).

This is precisely what I called for on Israeli Independence Day
at the beginning of this month, when I offered a prayer for peace
between the children of Isaac and the children of Ishmael (a copy
of the prayer is available at my office). I dream of peace and of
two states: Israel and Palestine.

And so I turn to all those concerned with establishing peace
between the Palestinians and Israelis, whether Muslim or Jew, Arab
or Israeli.

Will you please join me in prayer and in dialogue so that
together we might inspire the members of our distinct communities
to work toward mutual understanding and coexistence?

Perhaps then, at some future date, we will be privileged to
celebrate the dual Independence Days of the states of Palestine and
Israel.
