Politicians to meet at UCLA to discuss health
care
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his opponent, Democratic
gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides, along with others, will be
coming to the UCLA campus today for a roundtable discussion about
the different problems surrounding the state, specifically health
care.
The event, which will be held in the Kerckhoff Hall Grand Salon
at 8:30 a.m., will highlight one of Angelides’ platforms to
improve the California health care system.
Schwarzenegger will present how he would plan to address the
health care crisis, though his plans have not yet been
relieved.
According to his Web site, Angelides said he believes working
families deserve affordable access to quality health care. As
governor, he would carry out this goal by finding ways to cover the
uninsured and to support community health clinics.
Animal rights group faces attempted murder
charges
Authorities have increased the reward for information about an
animal rights group’s attempted firebombing of a UCLA faculty
member’s home, partly because they have added attempted
murder to the charges against the group.
The FBI, Los Angeles Police and Fire departments, university
police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms held a joint
press conference on July 18, at which they raised the reward for
information leading to the conviction of the perpetrators from
$10,000 to $30,000.
The Animal Liberation Front claimed responsibility for the
attempted firebombing, which occurred June 30. The group said in a
statement it placed an incendiary device on the doorstep of Lynn
Fairbanks, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
The animal rights group said it targeted Fairbanks, who is also
director of the UCLA Center for Primate Neuroethology at the UCLA
Neuropsychiatric Institute, because of her involvement in animal
experimentation.
Officials said if the incendiary device placed on the doorstep
had functioned properly, it would have made escape difficult or
impossible, which prompted the addition of attempted murder
charges.
