[Digest]: Aikman inducted into Hall of Fame

Former UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman was among six players
inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday in Canton,
Ohio.

Aikman played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 2000, leading
them to three Super Bowl victories (1992, 1993, 1995). He was also
a six-time pro-bowler, earning the honor every year from 1991 to
1996.

Aikman played at UCLA from 1987 to 1988. Three other Bruins have
been inducted into the hall of fame: Bob Waterfield, Tom Fears and
Jimmy Johnson.

The other five NFL players inducted on Sunday included Reggie
White, Warren Moon, John Madden, Rayfield Wright and Harry
Carson.

BASKETBALL: Former UCLA coach John Wooden,
along with James Naismith, Dean Smith, Oscar Robertson and Bill
Russell, will be part of the first class inducted into the newly
formed National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City.
An induction ceremony will be held Nov. 19 at Kansas City’s
Crown Center Exhibit Hall. Although the National Collegiate
Basketball Hall of Fame is not meant to compete with the Basketball
Hall of Fame, all five inaugural members are already enshrined in
the other hall.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: After five days of
competition at the ConocoPhillips National Championships in Irvine,
UCLA swimmers came home with a laundry list of high finishes and
solid times. Leading the pack of eight current, former and future
Bruins was 2006 graduate Kim Vandenberg. She won the 200-meter
butterfly competition with a time of 2:08.51 and placed 8th in the
100m butterfly. The national championships served as the selection
meet for Team USA at five international meets and featured over 20
Olympic gold medalists.

Senior Amanda Blong of the diving team finished 10th on the
1-meter competition, leading all UCLA divers at the 2006 U.S.
Diving Championships in Indianapolis. Sophomore Tess Schofield
finished 15th overall, and Marisa Samaniego, also a sophomore,
finished 17th on the 1-meter.

SOCCER: The Under-20 U.S. National Team fell
2-0 to Paraguay in the Milk Cup championship game on Friday in
Coleraine, Northern Ireland. The match was even until Paraguay
pulled ahead just before halftime on a loose ball in front of the
net. Despite having five corner kicks and scoring opportunities,
the U.S. side failed to score, and after a Paraguay goal at the
hour mark the game was sealed. Future Bruin Tony Beltran played the
whole game, and fellow Bruin-to-be Chance Myers came off the bench
along with sophomore Sal Zizzo. Beltran and Myers highlight an
incoming class ranked No. 1 in the nation.

GOLF: UCLA junior Kevin Chappell tied for third
place at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship on Friday at the
Olympic Club near San Francisco. Chappell posted a score of 287
(+5) for the four-round tournament, tied with Cameron Tringale of
San Juan Capistrano. Senior Chris Heintz tied for 23rd overall by
posting a 293.
