Legendary coach Wooden recuperating

The UCLA Athletic Department released more good news about the condition of former basketball coach John Wooden on Monday afternoon.

The 97-year-old Wooden continues to do well after falling in his condo Friday. He suffered a fractured left collarbone and a hairline fracture in his wrist.

Doctors have placed a cast on Wooden’s wrist, and his arm will be in a sling when he leaves the hospital.

Coach Ben Howland visited Wooden on Monday afternoon, a day after his No. 3 UCLA team topped Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.

“Dad’s spirits are good, and his vital signs are fine,” said Nan Muehlhausen, Wooden’s daughter, on Monday. “Right now, the doctors are trying to keep the pain at a low level and the medication makes Dad drowsy, but he is doing well. I think they are going to put a new cast on his arm later today.”

Muehlhausen added that it will be a few more days before Wooden leaves the hospital. The family has requested that the name of the hospital be withheld and that people do not attempt to visit the hospital so Wooden can rest.

“He is doing fine, and everyone expects him to make a full recovery, but these things take time,” Muehlhausen said.

Wooden, who was born in Hall, Ind., in 1910, coached the UCLA basketball team for 27 seasons. In that time, he won 665 games and 10 national titles for the school. He retired in 1975.

Wooden regularly attended UCLA home basketball games up until this season. His family also recently requested that fans not approach the legendary coach for autographs at home games.

WINN IN WASHINGTON: Freshman diver Laura Winn is still in Washington after suffering a serious injury when she hit her face against the diving board during competition at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Winn did not lose consciousness, but she did suffer serious facial cuts and fractures.

The injury occurred during the preliminary rounds of the 3-meter competition on Friday afternoon. Winn was immediately taken to Harbor View Trauma Center in Seattle.

She had surgery Friday night and will have a follow-up operation later this week.

Because doctors do not want Winn to travel, she will remain in Washington while she recovers. She and her family are currently staying with the family of freshman swimmer Lauren Hall, who lives in Seattle.

“She’s doing well, and the next surgery should be her last,” said Stephanie Sampson, sports information director for the UCLA swim and dive team.

Sampson said Winn may not be able to return home to Westwood for a few weeks.

Winn was a high school All-American at Acalanes High School in Lafayette as a senior in 2007. She competed at several U.S. Diving meets that year and placed sixth on the 1-meter at the Amateur Athletic Union nationals.

She is a mechanical engineering student at UCLA.
