Record holder Mason Finley backs out of UCLA men’s track and field

In the first shake-up of the UCLA men’s track and field program after the departure of 10-year coach Art Venegas, Mason Finley, a thrower from Salida, Colo., has backed out of his commitment with UCLA, according to the Lawrence Journal-World.

Finley had signed a letter of intent with UCLA but recently decided to attend Kansas University since Venegas’ departure was announced July 2.

Finley currently holds the national high school record in discus with a throw of 236 feet, 6 inches.

No replacement has been announced for Venegas, and Finley was the first decommitment the men’s track and field program has faced.
