The bright yellow pillars came first. Then came the boardwalk.
Despite some students’ guesses, the new pillars and walkway next to Pauley Pavilion are not to keep people from tripping down the stairs. They are not the result of a lawsuit. They are not to keep university vehicles from falling into the garage.
The added features outside Parking Lot 7 mark the future location of a walkway that students will have to use while construction on Pauley Pavilion is in progress, said Bob Contini, superintendent of PCL Construction Services, the company doing the construction.
Major construction is set to begin later this year, Contini said.
Meanwhile, students are using the new additions to Bruin Walk to test their skateboarding skill and high jumping ability, and as a platform for making announcements.
Others just walk around them, unsure if they are supposed to tread on the wooden crossing.
The new additions outside Pauley Pavilion are the first signs of the $136 million renovation to the stadium beginning this year and set to finish by the 2012-2013 basketball season, said Marc Dellins, UCLA sports information director and associate athletic director.
Pauley Pavilion will be remodeled, possibly featuring seating closer to the floor, indoor concessions and box seating.
The Pauley Pavilion overhaul is funded by $100 million raised from private donations by UCLA’s Campaign of Champions and $36 million from non-additional student fees and other sources, Dellins said.
