CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

Both together and individually, members of the UCLA gymnastics team brought championships to Westwood in 2009. UCLA won its 15th Pac-10 title to close out the regular season, and seven Bruins were named to the Pac-10 All-Conference Team, including junior Vanessa Zamarripa, who was named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year. In the NCAA Championship, UCLA had 11 scores of a 9.9 or higher, which led the Bruins to their sixth national title. After UCLA won it all as a team, Zamarripa went on to win an individual championship in the vault, while senior Brittani McCullough won in the floor exercise. UCLA Athletics

The UCLA softball team hit home run after home run en route to its 11th national championship. The Bruins overcame injuries to key players in the regular season to put on a show of offensive firepower in an undefeated NCAA Tournament. In the championship round against Arizona, the Bruins were led by senior Megan Langenfeld, who fought through painful blisters on her hand to lead the team to a 2-0 sweep of the Wildcats. The team set school and NCAA tournament records for home runs this season, and hit at least two per game in their 10-0 postseason run to the title.

Simply put, UCLA has become synonymous with championships. Time and time again, the athletics program has made its presence felt regardless of the venue, consistently vying for a national title. Of course, with that tradition of team success has emerged the legacies of various coaches and players, whether it be baseball star Jackie Robinson, basketball wizard John Wooden or softball legend Lisa Fernandez. Take that rich history of excellence into account, and it’s easy to see why UCLA boasts the most NCAA titles of any school in the country. (Note: As of press time, the baseball team was still competing at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.)
