Speaks Out

Palestine Awareness Week is meant to educate students about human rights issues relating to Palestinians. Do you think the event will be effective? What do you hope it will contribute to the campus?

Karin Hilton
Graduate student, public health

I hope it brings attention to the issues … of states and borders. I don’t think there are two sides to the issue; there are many sides to the issue. So I hope it could lead the way to a more complex dialogue.

Shahid Mohammed
Graduate student, electrical engineering

I actually agree with what they’re doing. We get to hear a different voice than the one we hear in the media. Israel has committed … human rights violations, according to the U.N. … And the U.S. is Israel’s biggest ally.

Jerry Khachoyan
Second-year, political science

I’m pretty sure a lot of people don’t know a lot about the subject. So it’s always good to know what’s going on even if it’s not directly related to us. Before, I thought it was just an ethnic conflict, but it’s definitely more than that. There’s definitely a land issue, a military issue, a religious issue and so on.

Sam Ross
Fourth-year, European studies

At this current time, at this moment, more attention should be put on the democratic uprisings that are going on in the Middle East. I feel like that is a more pressing issue. But in general, it’s good to have intelligent dialogue on the Israel-Palestine situation because it’s extremely important for politics around the world.
