Amendment to change name of Student Welfare Commission put on upcoming USAC ballot

Members of the Student Welfare Commission are rallying to officially change the name of their office to what they say will better represent the office’s work and programs.

Last week, the Undergraduate Students Association Council unanimously approved a constitutional amendment, or an alteration to the wording of its constitution, to officially change the name of the Student Welfare Commission to the Student Wellness Commission.

The amendment will appear on the upcoming election ballot for the undergraduate student body to vote during elections from May 7-10. A simple majority of votes, or 51 percent, is required to change the name of the office.

The Student Welfare Commission is one of 13 offices in USAC, and its purpose is to provide services and resources related to student health and well-being.

But the office often receives calls about welfare checks, food stamps and financial aid, said Student Welfare Commissioner and fourth-year neuroscience student Tamir Sholklapper.

“That’s not our focus,” Sholklapper said. Programs put on by the Student Welfare Commission are health-awareness events and classes on stress, fitness and cooking.

USAC President Emily Resnick said that although the name might be changing, the work done by the office will not.
