USAC Recap — Sept. 3

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council unanimously approved contingency programming funds.

Special Presentations

  • Members of the UCLA student group Improving Dreams, Equality, Access, and Success, commonly known as IDEAS, presented to the council about a Senate immigration bill, “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act,” and some of the flaws they see in the bill. They said they think one of the problems with the bill is the fees required to apply for citizenship.

  • The executive director of the Homecoming Committee presented to the council about UCLA Homecoming this year and talked to them about involving student organizations in the homecoming festival.

  • Jillian Beck, the editor in chief of the Bruin, presented to the council about the paper’s advertisement policy and how controversial ads are reviewed before they are allowed to go into print.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said he has been talking with UCLA administrators about the USAC campaign against sexual assault called 7,000 in Solidarity.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office is launching a campaign to make sure student groups know about how to get funding from the Student Organizations Operational Fund.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said she is preparing for the United States Student Association Board of Directors meeting this weekend. She also said she has received a lot of feedback — both positive and negative — about a resolution USAC recently passed that criticized the use of the word “illegal” to describe undocumented individuals.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office is drafting a letter to the UCLA Academic Advancement Program asking for it to allow the Campus Retention Committee to be more involved with the planning of summer programs for new students, which are put on by the Academic Advancement Program.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Tyler Cherry, a third-year political science student, to be the next University of California Student Association Board of Directors proxy.

  • The council unanimously appointed Jas Kirt, a third-year political science student, to be a University of California Student Association Board of Directors proxy.

  • The council unanimously approved the members of the USAC finance committee.
