A UCLA student died in his Westwood apartment early Saturday morning in what police are investigating as a possible suicide.
Firefighters found the fourth-year economics student in a smoke-filled room when they responded to what was reported as a structure fire at 1:05 a.m. Saturday, said Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The student’s apartment building is near the corner of Levering and Kelton avenues.
When firefighters arrived, there was no active fire in the apartment building. Paramedics worked to try to revive the student before declaring him dead, Scott said.
In a statement Saturday afternoon, UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton said the university offers its deepest condolences to the student’s family and friends, who have asked for privacy at this time and sensitivity while others are notified.
He added that counseling resources are available for those impacted in the campus community, and that students can call UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services 24 hours a day at 310-825-0768.
