The hole left by the departure of Stan’s Donuts has a new filing: another family-owned donut shop.
Primo’s Donuts, a 64-year-old donut shop operated by three generations of the same family, will take over the Westwood Village vacancy previously occupied by Stan’s Donuts this fall, according to a press release from Bel Air Branding, who represents Primo’s Donuts.
Stan’s Donuts owner Stan Berman permanently closed Stan’s Donuts after 55 years in Westwood in April due to COVID-19 concerns.
Ralph and Celia Primo, who own Primo’s Donuts, said in the press release they were upset when they heard that Stan’s Donuts – a “friendly local competitor” – was closing due to COVID-19.
“There aren’t many family-owned mom and pops like us left that bake donuts fresh every morning and we have always felt that we shared the same type of customers and vision for our businesses,” they said. “The location in the heart of Westwood Village is so iconic, and we are honored to have a chance to open our doors here.”
Primo’s Donuts is based out of Mar Vista on Sawtelle Blvd, around 4 miles from the UCLA Campus. Primo’s Donuts also plans to open a new location in Culver City, according to the press release.
Food Insider rated Primo’s Donuts as one of LA’s best donut shops in 2019, and the Los Angeles times described Primo’s Donuts as “One of L.A.’s best doughnut shops.”
Under the August 7 guidelines for the City of Los Angeles, restaurants are permitted to offer take-out services and outdoor dining, but cannot open for indoor dining. Primo’s Donuts also offers delivery options through Grubhub and DoorDash.
Westwood Village currently has a 30% vacancy rate, in part due to UCLA’s transition to remote learning and March COVID-19 restrictions that closed non-essential businesses.
