The University of California announced Cecilia Estolano as the 2021-2022 UC Board of Regents chair in a press release Thursday.

The 2020-2021 Board of Regents approved Estolano’s chair nomination in their May meeting, and her term begins effective July 1.

Estolano previously served as the UC Board of Regents vice chair and was appointed to the board in August 2018 by former California Gov. Jerry Brown.

Estolano also formerly served as deputy chair on the Environmental Protection Agency Review Team, Energy and Environment Group for former President Barack Obama’s presidential transition team. She is the current CEO of Estolano Advisors, an urban planning and public policy firm and Better World Group, an environmental policy and advocacy group.

She earned a master’s degree in urban planning from UCLA in 1991 and has since returned to teach courses on equitable urban development, law and the quality of urban life at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.

“It is a profound honor to help steer UC during this moment of unparalleled opportunity,” Estolano said in the press release. “I look forward to addressing how more Californians from every corner of the state can earn degrees from UC and elevating UC’s leadership in climate research.”

The UC also confirmed Regent Richard Lieb as the new vice chair of the Board of Regents and announced 2021-2022 committee chair appointments, according to the press release.

New and returning committee chairs include Regent Michael Cohen as the Finance and Capital Strategies Committee chair, Regent Gareth Elliott as the Compliance and Audit Committee chair, Regent Lark Park as the Academic and Student Affairs Committee chair, Regent John Pérez as the chair of the Health Services Committee, Regent Janet Reilly as the Public Engagement and Development Committee chair, Regent Richard Sherman as the chair of the Investments Committee and Regent Jonathan Sures as the chair of the National Laboratories Committee.

Estolano and the new chairs will head their first regents meeting July 21.
