Pre-professional medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon has closed its UCLA chapter amid a university investigation.
The national fraternity, which has had a chapter on UCLA’s campus since 2004, closed its UCLA chapter after the opening of a university investigation into its activities, according to an emailed statement by Karen Katz, the fraternity’s CEO.
“Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity, Inc. has closed the California Gamma premedical chapter and expelled all members,” Katz said in the statement.
In a post on Reddit, an anonymous user alleged that the UCLA chapter of the fraternity closed because of issues with hazing. According to the national fraternity’s risk management policy, the fraternity does not condone hazing in any form, including any attempt to harass or ridicule students.
Katz added in the statement that the fraternity is unable to comment further on any specific allegations made until UCLA has finished its investigation into the fraternity’s activities. Student leaders of the fraternity’s UCLA chapter did not respond in time to requests for comment.
UCLA spokesperson Ricardo Vazquez said in an emailed statement that while the university does not comment on specific conduct cases, hazing is prohibited by the university, and allegations of it are investigated thoroughly.
“Hazing of any kind is antithetical to our values and violates our codes of conduct,” he said in the statement. “When suspected hazing or other misconduct by individual students or by student groups are reported to the Office of Student Conduct, they are evaluated according to university policies and procedures.”
