Rep. Adam Schiff and former baseball player Steve Garvey advanced to November’s general election for California’s United States Senate seat, according to the Associated Press.
Schiff, a Democrat, has served in the House of Representatives since 2001. During his time in Congress, he chaired the House Intelligence Committee and served on the House Appropriations and House Judiciary Committees. Schiff also worked as an impeachment manager in 2020 during the first impeachment of then-President Donald Trump.
Garvey, a Republican, is best known for playing professional baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres from 1969 until 1987. He has not previously held political office.
Since California is a top-two primary state, the candidates who finish in first and second advance to the general election. Democrats Rep. Katie Porter and Rep. Barbara Lee are likely to finish in third and fourth, respectively.
The winner of the election in November will replace Sen. Laphonza Butler, who was appointed to the position Oct. 1 after the passing of former incumbent Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who served in the position for more than 30 years. Butler opted not to run in the election and did not endorse a candidate.
With 57.5% of the vote in at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, Schiff had received 36.7% of the vote, Garvey received 29.2%. Porter and Lee combined for 21.8%, according to the California Secretary of State’s office.
Californians also voted in a special election primary for who would advance to replace Butler in early December after the general election to serve the final month of Feinstein’s term. Feinstein was last elected in 2018 to a six-year term.
Schiff, who is 63 years old, is expected to win in November, as California is a traditionally “blue” state, and he will likely siphon the electorates of Porter and Lee.
