Multiple fires continue to burn across Los Angeles County.
The nearest fire to campus, which began in Pacific Palisades, currently has a size of over 23,654 acres and is 11% contained, according to the Cal Fire website. The fire has prompted evacuation orders less than a mile from UCLA, though as of 5:17 p.m. Saturday, there are no evacuation warnings or orders covering campus itself.
Instruction for both undergraduate and graduate students will remain remote until at least Jan. 17, UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk said in a Saturday campuswide email. Students living in UCLA Housing have been advised that it is likely that an evacuation warning may be issued covering the campus.
If an evacuation order is issued, students should report to Pauley Pavilion or the Tipuana Apartments to receive transportation to an off-campus location. Transportation for students who do not live in UCLA Housing will also be provided, said Undergraduate Students Association Council President Adam Tfayli.
The air quality on campus is currently listed as “moderate”, with unusually sensitive individuals potentially affected. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health previously declared a public health emergency in relation to air quality.
A second fire, which has affected areas near Pasadena and Altadena, currently has a size of 14,117 acres and is 15% contained, according to the Cal Fire website. A fire in West Hills is 80% contained and has a size of just over 1,000 acres.
There is one other active fire less than 1,000 acres in size burning across the county.
