In the news:

UCLA is helping people impacted by fires across Los Angeles County in a number of ways, said UCLA spokesperson Ricardo Vazquez in an emailed statement.

The university has donated space at the UCLA Research Park – formerly the Westside Pavilion – to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its Disaster Recovery Center. The center is scheduled to open Wednesday.

“Use of the newly acquired 700,000-square-foot property two miles from the Westwood campus will open under the direction of FEMA as a central hub for evacuated residents, offering aid to those who have lost their home, business, and/or vital records,” he said in the statement.

UCLA is also offering housing, both near the Westwood campus and at UCLA South Bay, to employees who have lost their homes in the fires, Vazquez said.

UCLA is offering reduced hotel rates for people who have lost their homes or evacuated, and faculty on sabbatical can chose to offer their housing to evacuees from recent fires, Vazquez said. He added that employees impacted by the fires can access emergency financial assistance, administrative leave and catastrophic leave through university programs.

UCLA Health has a dedicated Red Cross fund that has raised over $4,000 to support services for people impacted by the fires, Vazquez said. There were 1,275 people in Red Cross shelters in LA County as of Saturday night, said Mimi Teller, the development communications manager with the American Red Cross LA Region.

The Semel Healthy Campus Initiative Center is also offering a guide to employees for taking care of themselves and their families during the fires, Vazquez said. UCLA has also compiled a number of resource directories for those impacted by fires, including ones for students, faculty and members of the public, he added.
