UCPD arrested one person for the possession of an illegal firearm during a routine traffic stop near Sproul Hall around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The person voluntarily disclosed the presence of the firearm and was taken into custody, according to a post from UCPD on social media platform X.

Jeffrey Chobanian, UCPD’s acting captain of the administrative bureau, said in an emailed statement that the person had no affiliation with UCLA. Officers searched the vehicle and did not find any additional weapons, they added in the statement.

It is illegal to bring loaded firearms onto UC campuses without written permission, according to the California Penal Code. UCLA Policy 131 also prevents items such as firearms, fireworks and large knives from being brought onto campus.

Chobanian said in the statement they believe this was an isolated incident with no connection to any broader criminal activity. He added that students who become aware of any incident of a firearm on campus should not approach the individual and should call 911 immediately.
