Bruin Learn, UCLA’s primary learning management system, shut down early Monday morning because of an Amazon Web Services outage.
Canvas – the platform that Bruin Learn was built on – said in a message on the Bruin Learn homepage that it is working to recover the website as soon as possible. Bruin Learn contains information about students’ courses and schedules and is often the designated place for students to upload assignments.
The website was back online around 3:45 p.m. Monday.
“Canvas is experiencing issues due to an ongoing AWS incident,” the Bruin Learn homepage said as of 2:45 p.m. Monday. “We are currently working on recovering this as soon as possible.”
Users also could not log in to Canvas’ mobile app as of 2:45 p.m. Monday, which displayed a popup that read “Oops, something went wrong,” and gave users the option to log out or retry.
Some students – especially those with midterms coming up – said the outage inconvenienced them as they tried to study and complete assignments. Alondra Vieyra, a third-year psychology student, said her lecture was canceled because her course materials were inaccessible outside of Bruin Learn.
“I had a midterm later today, and last night I was trying to use Canvas, but it was down so I couldn’t access my practice tests and past homework assignments to study,” said Sagana Chattanathan, a first-year aerospace engineering student. “I hope it will be up soon, because I have more midterms this week to study for.”
Kira Melton, a second-year physiological science student, said she was not able to turn in her essay on Bruin Learn because of the outage. However, she added that her teaching assistants were understanding about her late submission.
UCLA Digital & Technology Solutions said in a Monday morning post to its website that instructors can provide additional quiz attempts and extend assignment due dates to students impacted by the outage.
Amazon Web Service, which supports a large network of global applications, experienced an outage early Monday morning, causing issues for websites and apps like Apple Music, Snapchat and Facebook.
The university transitioned from Common Collaboration and Learning Environment – another LMS – to Bruin Learn in winter 2022.
“It’s been a little stressful, but we’re working around it,” Melton said.
