UCPD arrested a man who had an arrest warrant for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm in the John Wooden Center on Sunday around 12:20 p.m.
Multiple police cars were parked outside the building around 11:30 a.m., and officers escorted a man from the center’s outdoor courtyard to the exit around 12:15 p.m.
UCPD arrested the same man in July 2024 for the illegal possession of a firearm on campus, said Scott Scheffler, the captain of UCPD’s administrative and operations bureaus, in an emailed statement. He added in the statement that the original incident was the basis for the arrest warrant.
The man was unarmed at the time of the arrest and is not affiliated with UCLA, Scheffler said in the statement.
“We received a tip that he may be on campus,” Scheffler said in the statement. “Officers checked the Wooden Center because we knew he occasionally goes there.”
Steve Lurie, the associate vice chancellor for campus and community safety, said in an emailed statement that officers had been notified that the man’s vehicle was on campus, and that he was arrested “without incident” and transferred to the LA County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Center.
All registered undergraduate students have access to the Wooden Center, and non-students can purchase community memberships that allow them to use the gym. It is unclear if the suspect had an active membership at the Wooden Center.
“This arrest represents an example of UCPD being diligent about keeping individuals with active arrest warrants out of our community,” Lurie added in the statement.
