Vibrant handmade dresses spun in unison to the beat of drums and trumpets in Bruin Plaza.

Grupo Estudiantil Oaxaqueño de UCLA hosted its annual Guelaguetza performance May 30, featuring dancers from El Ballet Folklórico Oaxaqueño Nueva Antequera, Maqueos Music Academy and Diablos Nueva Unión.

The Guelaguetza was originally a mountaintop ritual performed for Zapotec deities but became a celebration of Oaxaca’s eight indigenous regions following an earthquake in 1931. Its name is derived from a Zapotec word for offering, gift or fulfillment.

The festival is celebrated in Oaxaca every July.
