For some, June brings sweltering heat. For others, it’s a chance to breathe.
The oldest Pride parade in Southern California returned to Hollywood Boulevard on June 14. LA Pride, organized by the Christopher Street West nonprofit, made history in 1970 as the first permitted Pride parade in the world. Since then, CSW has committed to advocating for the Los Angeles LGBTQ+ community. This year, CSW named “Somebody Somewhere” actor Jeff Hiller, California’s first openly transgender trial lawyer Mia Yamamoto and Beauty 2 The Streetz founder Shirley Raines as the grand marshals for its 56th annual parade. Having grown up in San Antonio, Hiller said he didn’t experience his first Pride until moving to Denver.
“It felt like oxygen,” Hiller said. “I hope that people get to breathe today.”
