A union representing administrative professionals and clerical workers across the UC voted to approve a new contract with the University July 2.
Teamsters Local 2010’s Clerical & Allied Services CX unit – which represents 22,000 UC workers – reached the five-year agreement after 10 months of bargaining and with 99% of voting members in favor, according to a July 2 press release from the union. The unit’s previous contract expired in March.
The Clerical & Allied Services CX unit is Teamsters Local 2010’s largest and oldest, according to the union’s website.
The new contract includes a $1,500 ratification payment, a $1,000 longevity lump sum for employees who have or reach 20 years of full-time employment at the UC and a $25 minimum wage for all unit employees retroactive to April 1. The contract also provides healthcare subsidies for some union members.
The contract will help the University serve its students and patients, said Heather Hansen, a spokesperson for the UC Office of the President, in an emailed statement.
“The University of California is pleased to reach a contractual agreement with Teamsters Local 2010 that provides competitive compensation and benefits,” Hansen said in the statement.
Jason Perez, a member of the Clerical & Allied Services CX unit’s bargaining team, said the contract will help union members afford to live in California.
“We’re making headway in being able to afford life,” he said.
Perez said they believe the most impactful part of the contract is the cap on healthcare plan cost increases. Union members have been responding positively to the contract, he added.
“Our members overwhelmingly voted “Yes” to ratify the strongest, richest contract in the history of UC,” Jason Rabinowitz, secretary-treasurer of Local 2010, said in the press release. “We won this historic agreement by standing together as Teamsters and building our Union into a powerhouse for workers’ rights.”
