Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed podcaster Scott Galloway to the UC Board of Regents on Wednesday.
Galloway – who hosts The Prof G Pod, a tech-focused podcast with up to 100,000 monthly listeners – must receive confirmation from the state Senate before serving on the 26-member board. Galloway is an alumnus of UCLA and UC Berkeley, and a professor of marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business.
The UC Regents oversee the governance of the 10 universities in the UC system.
Galloway, a Democrat, has critiqued elite universities across the United States for their high tuition and lack of accessibility on his podcast.
He has also openly criticized diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, arguing that college acceptances should be based on socioeconomic status instead of physical characteristics, according to a May 2024 video by the Wall Street Journal.
Galloway called DEI “an incredible misdirect and unnecessary” in a November 2024 YouTube video.
Galloway has served on the board of directors for companies including Panera Bread, Urban Outfitters and the New York Times Company. He was the founder and chairman of digital intelligence firm L2, e-commerce gift retailer RedEnvelope and brand consulting firm Prophet.
