Company is finding the humor in the awkward. Twelve Company members will present 14 sketches in between acts at this year’s Spring Sing. Co-director and fourth-year economics and public affairs student Kieran McCarthy said this year’s sketches focus on the awkwardness that comes with navigating changing COVID-19 regulations, as well as acknowledging that, unlike previous years, UCLA students have not shared the same on-campus experiences. ScatterTones is focused on the light at the end of the tunnel with its rendition of the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” Working virtually over the past year, the a cappella group selected, arranged, filmed and mixed their cover of the Beatles track with a focus on community, according to second-year psychobiology student and first-year member of ScatterTones Marcos Ayon. Swati’s music is seeing the light of day for the first time. Going by her first name as a solo act, Swati Swaminathan will be making her musical debut at this year’s Spring Sing with her original song “Brown.” The fourth-year computer science student said she auditioned on a whim after she wrote “Brown,” which is only her second fully finished song. Kay Sibal is excited for people to “Finally See” her songwriting abilities. The third-year theater student said she’s wanted to be a part of Spring Sing ever since watching it her freshman year of college, and this year she will be on the other side of the stage competing with her original song “Finally See.” The song is about breakthroughs people achieve after facing adversity, and after writing it, Sibal said she knew she wanted to record it for Spring Sing. Devin Mallory will be showcasing his definition of love on stage. The fourth-year dance student will be performing a dance solo to Ilene Woods’ “So This Is Love (Cinderella’s Song).” Mallory said his performance stems from a traumatic childhood experience with his father, leading him to incorporate clips from the finale of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” that depict the unstable relationship Will Smith has with his father.
