Phone-Free School Act bans cellphones in K-12 schools, emphasizes mental health

Gov. Gavin Newsom approved an act to ban the use of cell phones in K-12 schools in September 2024. Assembly Bill 3216 – also known as the Phone-Free School Act – mandates that every school district, charter school or county office of education at the K-12 level develop a rule that will prohibit or limit student use of cellphones when at school or under the supervision of an employee of the school district by July 2026. TFT Dean Brian Kite appointed as dean and vice provost of graduate education

School of Theater, Film and Television Dean Brian Kite will be UCLA’s next dean and vice provost of graduate education. In a Dec. 20 announcement, then-Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt announced that Kite, who had been TFT dean since November 2023 – and, prior to that, the interim dean since 2020 – would be appointed to the role effective Feb. UC faculty delay proposal for ethnic studies requirement for incoming students

California partners with hardware firm for AI education in community colleges

California is collaborating with an artificial intelligence company to further integrate AI into the lives of community college students, educators and workers. Gov. Gavin Newsom and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang signed an initiative this August to form a partnership between the California government and NVIDIA, an AI hardware supplier. Read more...

UCLA, Morgan State University partner for mutual research, mentor opportunities

UCLA partnered with Morgan State University, a historically Black university, to improve research and mentorship between the two institutions. MSU has $20 million in federal grant funds and over 10 state-supported research centers in Baltimore, Maryland, according to UCLA’s announcement of the partnership. Read more...

UCLA study finds impact of culturally divisive conflict on American public schools

A recent UCLA study found that cultural and political conflict is costing American public schools more than just time. American school districts have spent roughly $3.2 billion toward resolving tensions over how political issues are taught in educational spaces in the 2023-2024 school year, according to the study.
