Uncontained blaze threatens San Fernando Valley, UCLA campus mostly unaffected

A growing fire is threatening the San Fernando Valley around 15 miles from campus. The Saddleridge fire, which has burned more than 4,700 acres, started in Sylmar late Thursday night and spread to the Porter Ranch area, according to the most recent Los Angeles Fire Department alerts. Read more...

Disability Awareness Week town hall discusses educating faculty on campus resources

Faculty and students shared information on campus resources and services for students with disabilities at a town hall Wednesday. The Facilities Commission, a part of the undergraduate student government, hosted a town hall during Disability Awareness Week to share resources and give a platform to students with disabilities to ask questions or share their experiences. CALPIRG is working to grow student-voter turnout, prepare UCLA for 2020 elections

UCLA students said they are working to institutionalize voting on campus in an effort to increase student-voter turnout in the upcoming 2020 general election. The California Public Interest Research Group hosted an event Thursday morning at Bruin Plaza to discuss UCLA student-voter turnout in the 2018 midterm elections and efforts to increase turnout in the upcoming 2020 elections. Music student is first to receive scholarship named in honor of Beach Boys member

A music student was the first recipient of a new scholarship inspired by Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson. The scholarship, awarded this year to third-year music composition student David Ghesser, will be presented every other year to a third-year student in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music interested in pursuing a career in composing, arranging or producing popular music. ’10 Questions’ series looks at moral truth and the creation of knowledge

UCLA faculty from the humanities, arts and life sciences answered the question, “What is knowledge?” Tuesday at the second lecture of a 10-week series. Tyler Burge, a professor in the Department of Philosophy, said he thinks knowledge exists in many forms including common sense, scientific knowledge and historical knowledge, and should not be considered as a single, unified concept. Fewer UCLA commuters are driving to campus alone than ever before

More commuters are forgoing driving alone to UCLA compared to county-wide commuting trends. UCLA reached its lowest drive-alone rate ever in 2018, according to a press release from UCLA Transportation. Read more...

Student groups to launch campus-wide events for Disability Awareness Week

Student organizations and campus resources gathered at Bruin Plaza on Monday to kick off Disability Awareness Week. Representatives from the Undergraduate Students Association Council Facilities Commission, UCLA’s Disabilities and Computing Program and the UCLA Center for Accessible Education were among the organizations that participated in DAW, an annual series of events on campus intended to raise awareness for people with disabilities.
