Mark Sawyer spoke Spanish with a Cuban accent, despite growing up in the United States. While leading study abroad programs in San Juan, Puerto Rico, locals would call him “El Cubano.” Sawyer, a political science and African American studies professor known for his work on race relations in Cuba, died March 26 in Los Angeles. Herb Alpert, a musician and philanthropist, will be awarded the university’s highest honor in June, UCLA officials announced Wednesday. Chancellor Gene Block will present Alpert, who has donated to and supported UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music for years, with the UCLA Medal on June 16 at the school of music’s inaugural commencement ceremony.
