The UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge project released a report Wednesday detailing its research plan to make Los Angeles more environmentally sustainable by 2050. The five-year plan outlines goals such as powering Los Angeles County entirely with renewable energy, switching to locally-sourced water supplies and increasing native biodiversity and ecosystem health. The American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, voted Tuesday to rescind UCLA professor Patrick Harran’s nomination to be a fellow. The association rescinded his nomination after learning the Los Angeles District Attorney filed felony charges in 2011 against Harran, a chemistry and biochemistry professor, for labor code violations that led to the death of one of his lab technicians. A UCLA official criticized anti-Semitic comments made by a UCLA student on Facebook in an email statement sent to the student body Wednesday. Janina Montero, vice chancellor for student affairs, sent the email after a pro-Israel group on campus condemned an undergraduate student for a series of comments posted on the Facebook status of Jewish actress and UCLA alumna Mayim Bialik. Two UCLA professors will be honored as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, in February.
