Ying-Ying Meng remembered as kind researcher who mentored public health scholars

Ying-Ying Meng, the former director of research at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, died April 11. She was 68. Meng, who began working at the center in 2000, also served as a senior research scientist and the co-director of the CHPR’s Chronic Disease Program. Read more...

United Auto Workers Local 4811 votes to authorize strike

RefineLa, Forward host pop-up thrift market to raise funds for Palestine

RefineLA and Forward hosted a pop-up thrift market Thursday on the Sunset Village Plaza lawn to benefit Palestine. The market – which included vendors selling art, secondhand clothing, jewelry and baked goods – came after the UC Divest Coalition and Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA created the Palestine solidarity encampment in Dickson Plaza on April 25 to demand that the UC divest from companies associated with the Israeli military. Abel Valenzuela Jr. appointed as dean of UCLA College Division of Social Sciences

Abel Valenzuela Jr. will be the next dean of the UCLA College Division of Social Sciences, removing the interim status from the post he’s held since September 2022.  Valenzuela joined UCLA’s faculty 30 years ago, now holding appointments in Chicana/o and Central American studies, labor studies and urban planning.  He previously chaired the Department of Chicana/o and Central American studies, directed the Center for the Study of Urban Poverty and was special advisor to the chancellor on immigration policy.
