Sixty-two years after Gonzalo Freixes fled Cuba with his family, UCLA finally gave him a chance to return. When arriving to host a global immersion course in the country, Freixes, an associate dean and adjunct professor of accounting in the UCLA Anderson School of Management, said he had a nostalgic return to his native country, which he realized had developed little since his departure. This post was updated Jan. 9 at 9:36 p.m. UCLA acquired the former Westside Pavilion mall Dec. 27 with plans to make it into the UCLA Research Park. The former mall space, which is two miles from the UCLA campus, will host the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy at UCLA and the UCLA Center for Quantum Science and Engineering, according to a campuswide email sent Wednesday by Chancellor Gene Block. In January 2019, developer Hudson Pacific Properties and real estate investment trust company Macerich announced Google would be leasing the former mall, which is located on West Pico Boulevard, to convert the space into an office campus for the company. UCLA announced that it will be continuing its pilot off-campus meal plan, which is available to residents in some university-owned apartments, for winter quarter. In a Monday email sent to undergraduate students in University Apartments North – which includes the Laurel, Palo Verde and Tipuana buildings – UCLA Housing said the meal plan will offer 77 meals to students across the quarter at a total cost of $1,155, or $15 per meal.
