Man arrested for allegedly stealing rare Chinese manuscripts from UCLA libraries

A man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly using false identities to steal over $200,000 worth of rare Chinese manuscripts from the UCLA Library system. Jeffrey Ying, a resident of Fremont, California, allegedly stole manuscripts from the UCLA East Asian Library and UCLA Library Special Collections and replaced them with false copies multiple times since October 2024, according to an affidavit filed with a criminal complaint. UCLA ethnic studies centers’ posters, bulletin boards targeted with vandalism

The posters and bulletin boards outside UCLA’s ethnic studies centers have been the target of over a dozen vandalism incidents since April. Incidents have involved the removal or destruction of posters, flyers and office placards, said Jeffrey Chobanian, the acting captain of the UCPD administrative and operations bureau, in an emailed statement. Man charged with assault on pro-Palestine protesters in encampment takes plea deal

A counter-protester charged with assaulting protesters at UCLA’s Palestine solidarity encampment in spring 2024 accepted a plea deal July 7. Malachi Marlan-Librett, who graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2019 and then attended a UCLA film program, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, battery and a hate crime after he allegedly assaulted, followed and yelled racial epithets at pro-Palestine protesters in the encampment. Person steals merchandise near De Neve Plaza around 2 a.m. Friday

This post was updated Aug. 4 at 6:05 p.m. A person stole merchandise near De Neve Plaza around 2 a.m. Friday. A person, who was not affiliated with UCLA, agreed to meet with the suspect to sell him merchandise prior to the incident, according to a UCPD Clery Timely Warning crime alert. Read more...

LAPD arrests individual for threatening Westwood Village ambassadors with blade

One person was arrested Sunday after threatening Westwood Village ambassadors with a metal blade at the intersection of Weyburn Avenue and Glendon Avenue.  David Tunnell, a Westwood Village ambassador, said two of his coworkers arrived at the Corner Outlet around noon after receiving a report of a possible shoplifter.
