Low student voter turnout in midterm election mirrors statewide trend

Democrats snag local races, lose U.S. Senate

Gov. Jerry Brown has won his fourth term as California governor, according to the Associated Press. As of 12:40 a.m., with about 72 percent of precincts reporting, Brown had 58 percent of the vote compared to Neel Kashkari’s 42 percent. Passage of diversity requirement proposal met with optimism

Some students are optimistic that a new diversity requirement will help them understand different cultures, if professors follow through by developing a comprehensive curriculum. “UCLA is a diverse university because of the makeup of the students, but that doesn’t mean everyone is aware of it,” said Evelyn Tran, a fourth-year microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics student. Graduate students voice opposition to union’s divestment resolution

Some graduate student workers at the University of California are petitioning against a divestment resolution proposed by union leaders. On Oct. 18, the joint council of United Auto Workers Local 2865, which represents graduate student workers at the UC, agreed to submit a resolution calling for the UC and UAW International to divest from several companies that profit from the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
