UCLA mathematics professor Terence Tao awarded 2014 Royal Medal

Terence Tao, a UCLA mathematics professor, will receive the 2014 Royal Medal for physical sciences in December, according to a UCLA statement released on Wednesday. The Royal Society of London, the oldest science academy in continuous existence, will present the 39 year-old with the prize for his many contributions to math, including those in harmonic analysis, prime number theory and computer science, according to the Royal Society website. Man sentenced to jail time for Westwood apartment peepings

A 47-year-old man was ordered to serve 180 days in jail for peeping into several Westwood apartments in recent months. Christopher Mendicino pleaded no contest Tuesday to two charges of peeping and one charge of loitering, said Frank Mateljan, spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office, in an email statement. Water main break may have resulted from outdated engineering practices

City officials cited outdated engineering practices as the cause of last week’s water main burst in several statements this week. There was an extensive amount of corrosion both inside and outside of the pipes that burst on July 29 near UCLA, said Jim McDaniel, senior assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, at Tuesday’s Board of Water and Power Commissioners meeting.
