UCLA to put lights out on cigarettes today with ban on smoking around medical facilities
Kevin Williams, a senior custodian at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical center, sat near the bus stop at UCLA Medical Plaza on Monday, smoking a cigarette, aware that it would be one of his last on the medical facility's campus. Beginning today, a policy banning smoking in the medical and health sciences areas of campus, including the medical schools and some life science buildings, will go into effect "“ a process eight months in the making. Bruin Republicans host Tammy Bruce in effort to add perspective to conservatism
In spite of a 30-minute delay, a crowd of about 60 people remained captive as Tammy Bruce made a late entrance into Moore Hall. Bruce, a conservative radio talk show host, gave a speech titled "How Conservative Politics Empower Women, Gays, and Blacks," put on by Bruin Republicans Wednesday night. Samantha Schutte, president of Bruin Republicans and a third-year political science and economics student, said she thought Bruce's mixed politics could draw a varied crowd and bring a new perspective to the campus. Gov. Brown urges passage of Respect for Marriage Act, which would overturn Defense of Marriage Act
Gov. Jerry Brown recently sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee urging the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. His letter was accompanied by a separate letter signed by three California mayors, including Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and a group of 12 other bipartisan mayors and governors in favor of repealing the 1996 statute that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
