UCPD aids arrests for crimes related to LA fires; DA urges stricter punishments

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has made at least 39 arrests for crimes related to the January fires in Southern California. The LA County fires burned over 47,000 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection website. Read more...

Celine Parreñas Shimizu to become dean of School of Theater, Film and Television

A UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television alumnus will soon lead the school. Celine Parreñas Shimizu, the dean of the Division of Arts at UC Santa Cruz, will begin her tenure as dean of TFT at UCLA on July 1, according to a Thursday announcement from Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Darnell Hunt. Experts voice concerns about environmental impact of wildfire rebuilding

Urban planners expressed environmental concerns about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recent rebuilding efforts following January’s Los Angeles County wildfires. Shortly after multiple severe wildfires broke out in the LA area in January, Newsom announced plans to rebuild the affected regions, including signing an executive order to clear debris quickly, waiving California Environmental Quality Act permit requirements to rebuild homes and businesses faster and securing federal funds to repair damaged infrastructure.
