Unions hold strike authorization vote, urge UC stand up to Trump administration

Three unions representing about 40,000 UC academic and research employees began an unfair labor practice strike authorization vote Thursday. The voting period for the three unions – United Auto Workers Local 4811, Research and Public Service Professionals-UAW and Student Services and Academic Professionals-UAW, who are currently in contract negotiations with the UC – is set to close Friday. Materials conservation scholar, engineering professor Ioanna Kakoulli dies at 57

Ioanna Kakoulli, a professor of materials science and engineering, died Jan. 1. She was 57. Kakoulli was the first female professor hired by UCLA’s materials science and engineering department, according to an obituary posted by UCLA Global Antiquity. Read more...

UCLA psychology student receives prestigious NIH undergraduate scholarship

The United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization on Jan. 22, marking the end of its 78-year membership. Bruin Masters Swim Club members see self-growth through UCLA Recreation program

Waking up at the crack of dawn is routine for a group of swimmers at UCLA’s Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. About 20 members of the Bruin Masters Swim Club – a UCLA Recreation program for adult faculty, staff and students – start their days with swim sets at 5:45 a.m every Monday through Friday. Statistics and data science symposium hosts early-career scientists

Researchers celebrated the role of numerical data in scientific research at a Jan. 26 event at the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center. The Lange Symposium on Computational Statics and Biomedical Data Science – hosted by the UCLA Department of Computational Medicine and Human Genetics – invited six speakers from across the country to discuss their research.
