Hyperledger’s Hackfest for developers and blockchain technology at UCLA

Developers discussed new ways to apply blockchain technology at an event this week. USAC recap – Feb. 20

Agenda: The council decided not to allocate any funds over $1000 or make appointments because it did not have enough members present to meet quorum. The Undergraduate Student Association Council gave the Financial Supports Commission chairperson permission to make two $500 allocations within his own office for a retreat and workshop next week. Remodeled chemistry course allows for student research, publishing

A newly revamped chemistry course allows undergraduate students to conduct independent research and publish a paper in a science journal. This quarter, the chemistry department remodeled the curriculum of Chemistry C174: “Inorganic and Metalorganic Laboratory Methods” to allow students to pursue an independent group research project rather than follow an established lab procedure. Nonprofit organization grants student entrepreneurs startup funding

Aza Steel began his entrepreneurial career as a child in Santa Cruz, selling what he called “moon dust” in old film canisters to his neighbors. Even at UCLA, Steel, who graduated in 2013, said he was more focused on solving problems around him than supporting his GPA. Read more...

UCPD begins to enforce traffic rules on Bird scooter riders

This post was updated Feb. 20 at 9:00 p.m. University police have begun cracking down on students who disobey traffic rules while riding electric scooters. UCPD officers asked students who were skateboarding, scootering or biking on Bruin Walk on Friday to dismount from their vehicles. Read more...

Humanities graduates report high job satisfaction despite lower pay

Arts and humanities graduates are happy with their jobs despite earning less money, according to a study published earlier this month. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which surveyed graduates from 2015, found that although humanities graduates are slightly more likely to be unemployed and earn less than engineering, social science, business and life science graduates, about 87 percent of all workers with a bachelor’s degree in the humanities were satisfied with their jobs.
