UCLA Center for AIDS Research receives $7.7 million grant

Researchers at the UCLA Center for AIDS Research received $7.7 million to search for a long-term treatment for HIV and AIDS patients. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases donated a five-year grant to fund three projects under the Center for AIDS Research to prevent the HIV from re-emerging and multiplying after a patient stops taking medicine. Student club provides medical help to Vietnamese communities in need

Vina Nguyen’s grandfather died from cancer because of a lack of proper medical care. “All the doctors did was give him over-the-counter prescriptions,” Nguyen said. “It was only two days before he died that he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.” Nguyen, a fourth-year human biology and society student, said the lack of accessible healthcare in underprivileged communities in San Diego, where she grew up, was one of the reasons she joined Medical, Education Missions and Outreach, a student-run club at UCLA. Fire breaks out on balcony of Gayley Avenue apartment

Firefighters put out a fire in an apartment on Gayley on Saturday. Fire officials extinguished the fire on the balcony of 415 Gayley Ave. around 8:21 p.m., before it could spread to other parts of the building, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Read more...

WWNC asks to delay approval of Westwood Forward’s subdivision proposal

The Westwood Neighborhood Council requested the city to delay approving an application to create a new neighborhood council at its monthly meeting Thursday. Westwood Forward, a coalition of students, business owners and homeowners, submitted a subdivision application in December to split up the Westwood Neighborhood Council. Read more...

USP holds town hall, seeks student opinion on USAC’s $100,000 allocation

Students called on the UCLA Undocumented Student Program to create more scholarships and improve resources for undocumented students at a town hall event Thursday. USP, which received $100,000 from the Undergraduate Students Association Council’s surplus funds last month, hosted a town hall to receive student feedback on where to allocate the money.
